The screening evenings in Carleton-<\/span>sur<\/span>–<\/span>Mer<\/span> and <\/span>Gasp\u00e9<\/span> will both be offering the animat<\/span>e<\/span>d short <\/span>film <\/span>A Visit <\/span><\/i>(Qu\u00e9bec, 2018), <\/span>followed by the <\/span>documentary <\/span>ZAGROS <\/span><\/i>(Qu\u00e9bec, 2018). <\/span>A V<\/span><\/i><\/b>isit<\/span><\/i><\/b> was produced and directed by <\/span>Parissa<\/span> Mohit<\/span>, <\/span>based in <\/span>Montr<\/span>e<\/span>al and a graduate of Concordia University\u2019s Mel <\/span>Hoppenheim<\/span> School of Cinema in the animation program, as well as of the School of Cinema and Theater <\/span>at the Tehran University of Art in <\/span>Iran. <\/span>The filmmaker is also scriptwriter and director of photography for the film, <\/span>which was nominated at the <\/span>2019<\/span> Canadian Screen Awards<\/span> in the \u201cBest Animated Short\u201d<\/span> category. <\/span>Synopsis<\/span><\/i><\/b>: A child visits a woman who lives at the heart of a big city. <\/span><\/i>Colored<\/span><\/i> by this immense and fragile metropolis, an ethereal and mysterious story <\/span><\/i>develops <\/span><\/i>between the two of them.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Produced and directed by <\/span>Ariane<\/span> Lorrain and <\/span>Shahab<\/span> Mihandoust<\/span>, <\/span>ZAGROS<\/span><\/i><\/b> was part of the official selection of <\/span>the <\/span>2018<\/span> Montr<\/span>e<\/span>al<\/span> International Documentary Festival<\/span>. <\/span>It will be presented in the original version (<\/span>in <\/span>Farsi <\/span>and <\/span>Lori) with French subtitles. <\/span>Synopsis:<\/span><\/i><\/b> ZAGROS<\/span> takes a look at the creation of handmade carpets across <\/span><\/i>the Zagros <\/span><\/i>mountains<\/span><\/i> in western Iran, the land of the <\/span><\/i>Bakhtiari<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/i>Wool is the common thread linking the worlds of the weavers, dyers and herdsmen<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/i>The film reveals a culture both nomadic and sedentary through toil, with carpets <\/span><\/i>weaving the social fabric of the people\u2019s lives<\/span><\/i>, <\/span><\/i>lending them shape and color<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/i>The work is hard and more and more devalued by the outside world, but their lives are <\/span><\/i>honored<\/span><\/i> through the love they feel for their <\/span><\/i>traditions.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ariane<\/span> Lorrain is a documentary filmmaker born to a Qu\u00e9bec father and an Iranian mother. Her approach is close to the traditions of visual anthropology and of <\/span>experimental <\/span>film, <\/span>focusing on the senses and their poetry to make reality felt<\/span>. <\/span>Her works deal with identity and territory, <\/span>with cultural handover and collective rituals<\/span>. Her own mixed identity leads her to live and create between Montr<\/span>e<\/span>al <\/span>and the Middle East<\/span>. <\/span>ZAGROS<\/span><\/i> is her first feature-length film, sho<\/span>t<\/span> in her maternal line<\/span>, <\/span>the <\/span>Bakhtiari<\/span> tribe<\/span>. <\/span>Shahab<\/span> Mihandoust<\/span> was born shortly after the 1979 revolution <\/span>i<\/span>n Iran. During the massive wave of baby boomer immigration in the early 2000s, he left Tehran to <\/span>do film studies <\/span>in Montr<\/span>e<\/span>al, <\/span>and became a filmmaker in <\/span>2014. <\/span>In his works he uses forms both fictional and documentary in order to reflect human conditions and to study the relationships <\/span>of social and cultural <\/span>behaviors<\/span> to their environment<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AVA in Pasp\u00e9biac<\/h5>\n

 <\/p>\n

The feature-length <\/span>fiction <\/span>film <\/span>AVA<\/span><\/i><\/b> (Qu\u00e9bec, Iran, Qatar, 2017), which will be presented in <\/span>Pasp\u00e9biac<\/span>, was directed by <\/span>Sadaf<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Foroughi<\/span>. <\/span>This Iranian-Canadian filmmaker, videographer and editor, born in Tehran, holds a master\u2019s i<\/span>n<\/span> film studies from <\/span>Universit\u00e9<\/span> de Provence <\/span>and lives in <\/span>Montr<\/span>e<\/span>al. <\/span>She has done a number of short films<\/span>, <\/span>including <\/span>La <\/span><\/i>derni\u00e8re<\/span><\/i> sc\u00e8ne<\/span><\/i> (2011) <\/span>and <\/span>The Kid and the Kite<\/span><\/i> (2009). <\/span>AVA<\/span><\/i> received <\/span>several<\/span> nominations at the 2018 Canadian Screen Awards, and <\/span>ended up<\/span> winning in the \u201cBest First Feature\u201d and \u201cActress in a Supporting Role\u201d categories. It also received the <\/span>FIPRESCI <\/span>Discovery Award at the <\/span>2017 Toronto International Film Festival <\/span>and an <\/span>honorable<\/span> mention <\/span>for best first Canadian <\/span>film.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Synopsis:<\/span><\/i><\/b> Ava is 16 years old. But for someone living in Iran, adolescence is not a place of freedom and dreamed-of experiences. She must follow the rules, however much her <\/span><\/i>entire <\/span><\/i>being <\/span><\/i>longs for more and better<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/i>This obviously gives rise to tensions both at school and with her parents, all the more so when she discovers early on that her mother<\/span><\/i>,<\/span><\/i> who controls her especially severely<\/span><\/i>, <\/span><\/i>had a truly rebellious temperament of her own<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/i>T<\/span><\/i>his first feature film of <\/span><\/i>Sadaf<\/span><\/i> Foroughi<\/span><\/i>\u2019s<\/span><\/i> compose<\/span><\/i>s<\/span><\/i> an atmosphere as sensitive as it is surprising<\/span><\/i>, <\/span><\/i>centered <\/span><\/i>around<\/span><\/i> a female leading role of a rare richness<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gasp\u00e9sie is celebrating its 10th edition in 2019. An annual summertime event, it introduces the public to contemporary photographic creation, its language, its codes and its various esthetics through occupation
\nof a particular region: the Gasp\u00e9 Peninsula. There it presents a series of exhibitions and installations, public events conceived as a space for reflection and initiation, and a program of artist residencies and of exchanges with festivals in other countries.<\/p>\n
